Merchant Reviews, in Their Own Words

Every quote is verbatim and links to its original source. Helcim is a well-liked processor — we lead with praise because that’s what the data shows, then cover the real trade-offs.

What Merchants Love About Helcim

Transparent pricing, no monthly fees, and responsive human support come up repeatedly. Here's what merchants say works.

In short yes Helcim is great. They actually stick to what they say they will charge you. No PCI fees, monthly costs, start up cost, etc. Their support team is also super handy and they don't try to push you off the phone as quick as possible. I would highly recommend.

Just out of curiosity, why is nobody using Helcim instead of Stripe? Their fees seem to be so much lower. Am I missing something?

I am a big fan of Helcim. We recommend them to all of our clients.

Helcim is cheaper than Stripe, especially for businesses with higher transaction volumes. It uses an interchange-plus pricing model, which typically results in lower overall costs compared to Stripe's flat-rate pricing

I needed to arrange for a payment process very quickly...Monish was extremely helpful...I was able to pick up the payment processing units in only 2 business days.

I absolutely love using Helcim. I have used many other platforms in previous jobs, and not one matches the level of customer service which Helcim provides... whenever I hit a bump in the road, I just called customer service and an agent was able to walk me through it.

Account Closures & Fund Reversals

The most serious complaint pattern: merchants report accounts closed without warning or explanation, sometimes with funds reversed to customers — forcing the merchant to re-collect.

Having an account open for over a month...once we processed the first charge, they held the funds (almost $40K)...then abruptly, without any explanation closed the account.

Run, don't walk to another processor. Helcim is a bait and take operation...I lost $413.40 and the account was shut with no notification for no reason.

About 2 weeks later, I got an email saying my account was closed — no warning, no document requests, nothing… They returned ALL the money back to the customers… Helcim paid me $0 and sent every dollar back to my customers. I am now calling back every single customer to sort this out and it is an absolute nightmare.

Absolutely horrible company, I have been in business for 11 years yet they closed my account without notice or reason after using their service for 4 days, and refunded all Transactions to all customers, I only got to use the service for 4 days, I am running a legitimate business, all transactions were authorized no complaints from anyone nor suspected fraud, what they did should be illegal

Account terminated citing 'Acceptable Use Policy' violation. Company refused to disclose specific policy section violated.

Been in business over 11 years, thought I would try a new POS, after using less than a week I was not able to log in. Said my account had been closed... They made me lose a lot of time and money, what they did should be illegal, they refunded all transactions including goods already shipped

Fund Holds & KYC Delays

Beyond account closures, merchants report funds held for days to months during Trust & Safety reviews, KYC checks, and termination reserve policies. BBB filings document holds of $3K–$14K for up to 180 days.

My account got approved, I ran one tap-to-pay transaction for about $400, and then immediately got an email from their Trust and Safety team. I've provided everything they asked for, EIN/IRS tax info, my local state license and reseller permit… and it still feels like I'm jumping through hoops.

Dear @Helcim Trust & Safety Team, … You are know falsely withholding funds on the premise that a KYC inquiry is underway. You have 24 hours to remit payment. At 4:00PM CST, if satisfactory action has not been taken, we will file a claim in Nebraska state court…

KYC funds-hold complaint for 'Sleep Sanitation' business.

this company does offer very good rates for processing credit card transactions BUT they are very intrusive when it comes to your company finances. After 5 transactions with no problems the 6th was held up. Helcim decided that they wanted to review our private company financials! The 6th transaction had been approved so there was no issue with it or any of the previous transactions but Helcim REFUSED to release our money until they got the private company financial information.

I am the CEO of [company], a merchant account holder... August 14, 2026, I notified Helcim of unauthorized payment activity on my account. On August 18, 2026, Helcim's Trust and Safety team closed the account. Since that date I have made 13 separate contact attempts to resolve this... It has now been three weeks with no substantive response from Trust and Safety despite repeated daily follow-up, and despite the fact that I was the one who reported the unauthorized activity to them in the first place.

$14,307 held for 180 days documented in a separate BBB USA complaint.

Effective Rate on Small Tickets

Helcim's interchange-plus pricing genuinely saves money on larger transactions. But on small tickets (under $25), the fixed per-transaction cents take a bigger bite, and the effective rate can run higher than a flat-rate processor.

I've had 3 small transactions so far and my implied rate (not including the 25 cent fee) so far has been 3.76%, about 1% higher than I had expected based on their interchange plus advertising. Is this typical or should I expect it to average down over time?

I have been consistently charged about +0.5% above their advertised rate (so 2.7-3.5% instead of 2.2-3.0%) for a mix of MasterCard, Amex and Visa, tried to reach out to support to ask, but was on hold for over 30 mins.

effective rate ended up being 3.14%... they stated that the numbers shown are merely 'averages'

The bigger thing is that fixed 30 cents. On a $6 sale that's 5 percent before the percentage rate even applies. On a $60 sale it's half a percent. Your average ticket decides which structure wins… Work out your average sale first, then compare, or you'll optimise the wrong number.

Payout & Deposit Timing

Helcim's standard EFT deposits take 3–4 business days, with the initial review period often longer. This is normal for interchange-plus processors but slower than instant options.

We currently have ~ $14,000 USD in payments that have been in limbo since the 30th and even earlier. We used EFT payments with Quickbooks and they took 1-3 business days. What's normal with Helcim?

it was the waiting time to receive funds that really pushed us to want to return the $200 card reader and go back to square. They make it VERY HARD to return the product.

sometimes they delay batches...for more than 2 business days. Their answer is: 'The batch is under review'

Excellent except that funding day is not consistent.

Dashboard & Virtual Terminal UX

Some merchants report friction with Helcim's web interface — cumbersome address entry, pre-filled terminal fields, and fee reporting limited to monthly statements.

my sales support staff did not like using the computer interface for accepting credit cards because it is very cumbersome to use (according to them you have to enter everyone's full address and some of our customers are really not interested in giving their home addresses to us).

We ended up realizing that we couldn't use them due to the fact they only gave you access to information about processing fees in their monthly statements. Every merchant services provider I've ever used has those in batch reports.

I would give Helcim 5-stars if it weren't for the site timing out after about 30 seconds. The timing out issue is very annoying creating extra time when working with invoices.

Resolutions & Positive Updates

Some merchants who initially had issues with Helcim report positive resolutions after reaching out — a sign that the company does try to fix problems.

they did reach out and we had an open conversation… I walked away feeling like this is a company that does care, but they have a tough job balancing that customer care with some really stringent verification processes.

OP updated their own post with a positive resolution.

We liked their invoicing feature and they were very easy (almost a little too easy) to get an account setup with.

To my fellow artists, I am no longer using @Square or @PayPal for merch or payments! Going to try some alternatives like @Helcim, @Taptopay and @godaddy payments which take a much lower fee

APIs work, testable, and good customer service. Can't tell you how much customer service means in this time.

Where Helcim’s Model Has Trade-Offs

Helcim is a genuinely good processor. The trade-offs are structural, not signs of a bad company. Helcim uses interchange-plus pricing with a PayFac model (backend: Elavon). Both choices have real consequences.

“because we use interchange-plus pricing, smaller transactions (like your $12) tend to have a higher effective rate since the per-transaction cents have more impact. As your average transaction size increases (typically around $25+), that’s where you’ll start to see more meaningful savings.”

Interchange-plus is transparent and often cheaper for high-ticket or high-volume merchants. But for small-ticket businesses (coffee shops, $10 subscriptions, micro-SaaS), the fixed per-transaction cents push the effective rate above what a flat-rate processor charges. The math is real, and Helcim acknowledges it.

“Helcim isn’t a true direct processor — they operate as a PayFac. The actual backend processor is Elavon. That distinction matters. PayFacs can make quick, top-level decisions like shutting accounts down and refunding transactions without the deeper underwriting you’d typically get with a direct merchant account.”

The PayFac model explains the onboarding friction some new accounts experience. It’s the same model Stripe and Square use — fast signup, but risk review happens after you’re already processing. For most merchants, this is fine. For new, edge-case, or higher-risk businesses, it can create real problems in the first few weeks.

How Interchange-Plus Pricing Actually Works

Helcim passes through the card network’s interchange rate and adds a fixed markup. The interchange varies by card type — a basic Visa debit costs less than an Amex rewards card. This is genuinely transparent, but it means your effective rate changes with every transaction.

ComponentRateOn $50 txn
Interchange (avg)~1.8%$0.90
Helcim markup+0.4%$0.20
Per-transaction fee$0.25$0.25
Total per $50 saleEffective: ~2.7%$1.35

Example: $10K/month, $50 avg ticket

Monthly volume$10,000
Avg. transaction$50
Transactions200
Helcim (interchange-plus)~$320/mo
Competitors (flat rate)$330/mo
Difference~$10/mo

At $50 average tickets, Helcim and a flat-rate competitor cost about the same. Below $25, flat-rate pricing typically wins. Above $50, Helcim’s interchange-plus typically wins.

What Interchange-Plus Does to a $20 Subscription

Helcim adds a 0.4% surcharge on recurring transactions. Here’s how the math works on a $20/month subscription charge.

Helcim on a $20 subscription

Interchange (~1.8%)$0.36
Helcim markup (0.4%)$0.08
Recurring surcharge (0.4%)$0.08
Per-transaction fee$0.25
Total fees$0.77
Effective rate3.85%

Competitor on a $20 subscription (flat rate)

Processing (2.7%)$0.54
Per-transaction fee$0.30
Total fees$0.84
Effective rate4.2%

Even with the 0.4% recurring surcharge, Helcim is slightly cheaper on a $20 subscription (3.85% vs 4.2%). The gap is narrow enough that flat-rate pricing may be worth it for the simplicity alone — you always know the exact cost per charge without needing to track interchange categories.

When Helcim Is the Right Choice

Helcim is the right choice for a lot of businesses. These are the cases where it genuinely pulls ahead.

Canadian merchants

Helcim is one of the last Canadian-owned payment processors. If sovereignty, local support, and processing in CAD matter to your business, Helcim is the strongest option. They raised $53M in 2026 and are growing.

High-volume or high-ticket businesses

Interchange-plus pricing with automatic volume discounts means your rate drops as you process more. At $100K+/month, Helcim's effective rate will almost certainly beat any flat-rate processor.

Transparency-first merchants

You see exactly what the card network charges and what Helcim adds on top. No bundled mystery fees. If knowing the exact cost breakdown matters more than a simple number, Helcim delivers.

Free hardware & in-person

Helcim offers a free Smart Terminal program and competitive in-person rates (as low as IC + 0.15% + $0.06 at the highest volume tier). For brick-and-mortar businesses that want interchange-plus, this is a strong offering.

When Easy Might Be a Better Fit

Easy is a flat-rate payment processor for US merchants. Instead of interchange-plus math, you get one rate: 2.7% + $0.30 per transaction, with subscriptions, invoicing, fraud screening, and chargebacks included.

Interchange-plus is transparent, and Helcim does it well. The trade-off is that your effective rate shifts with every card type, transaction size, and volume tier. If you’d rather forecast against one number, Easy gives you that.

Easy is self-custodial. Your money stays in your account from the first transaction. Where Helcim’s PayFac model means your funds pass through their system before reaching you in 3–4 days, Easy settles next-day by default.

Where Easy Pulls Ahead

Specific advantages Easy offers over Helcim’s interchange-plus model. These are narrower than the Stripe comparison — Helcim already wins on transparency and no monthly fees.

Predictable pricing on every ticket

Easy charges 2.7% + $0.30 regardless of card type, transaction size, or volume tier. No interchange math, no variable rates. For merchants selling small items where Helcim's fixed cents push the effective rate above 3.5%, the flat rate is often cheaper and always simpler to forecast.

Next-day payouts, standard

Where Helcim's EFT deposits take 3–4 business days (longer during initial review), Easy settles next-day as the default with instant available. Faster access to your own revenue without waiting for batch processing.

ACH and stablecoin rails

Helcim focuses on card processing. Easy also offers ACH at 0.5% + $1.00 (capped at $4/txn) and stablecoin payments at 0%. For B2B invoicing or crypto-native businesses, these are genuinely differentiated rails.

Self-custodial fund structure

Easy's custodial structure means your revenue goes to accounts you own from the first transaction. Your idle cash earns yield (3.70% APY based on US Treasury rates). Most processors, including Helcim, hold your funds in their accounts before depositing.

Where Easy Falls Short

Easy is a good fit for a lot of merchants, but Helcim has real advantages in several areas.

US only

Easy only supports US-based merchants right now. Helcim supports both US and Canada — if you're a Canadian business, Helcim is the better option.

Client types limited

Easy currently doesn't work with some merchant types like coffee shops and restaurants. These businesses are better served by Square or Toast.

Newer platform

Helcim has years of integrations, a proven POS hardware program, and an established ecosystem. Easy's integration ecosystem is smaller. If you depend on a specific integration, check that it works with Easy before switching.

No free hardware program

Helcim offers a free Smart Terminal to qualifying merchants. Easy has terminal support but doesn't match Helcim's hardware program. For brick-and-mortar merchants, this matters.

Alternatives Worth Considering

If Easy doesn’t fit, these processors are worth a look.

Stripe

Developer-first

The most extensive payment API and integration ecosystem available. Supports 135+ currencies, marketplace payment splitting via Connect, and enterprise billing tools. If your team builds custom checkout flows or operates internationally, Stripe is hard to beat.

Square

In-person retail

In-person payments first, everything else second. Hardware, inventory, employee scheduling, all in one system. If most of your sales happen at a counter or a table, Square was designed around that workflow. Instant deposits available for a fee.

PayPal

Marketplaces

Buyers know PayPal. For marketplace sellers and small international merchants, that brand recognition and buyer protection can matter more than the processing rate. Instant transfers available.

Adyen

Enterprise scale

Built for large-scale commerce with a single platform covering online, in-store, and mobile payments across 30+ countries. Interchange-plus pricing with no monthly minimums on their online plan. If you need global coverage and unified reporting, Adyen handles volume that most processors can't.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Helcim is a genuinely well-regarded payment processor. It offers transparent interchange-plus pricing, no monthly fees, no PCI fees, and no contracts. Merchants on Reddit and X consistently praise the pricing transparency and human support. The main trade-offs: effective rates run higher on small tickets (under $25) because the fixed per-transaction cents dominate, payouts take 3–4 business days via EFT, and new accounts sometimes face Trust & Safety reviews during the first few batches. For US merchants who want a simpler flat rate and faster payouts, Easy is worth comparing.
